British Foreign Minister Liz Truss received heavy new support on Wednesday with her former health partner Sajid Javid, and saw her comfortable lead confirmed in a new poll. Liz Truss enjoys a 32 point lead over her rival Rishi Sunak, while the previous YouGov study gave her a 34 point lead.
Fifth support from a former candidate for Truss
In a column published in the Times On Wednesday night, former Health Minister Sajid Javid, whose resignation in early July triggered a bloodbath of departures fatal to Boris Johnson, gave his support to Liz Truss. “If we can reform our government with a bold agenda, the Conservatives can still be defeated” the opposition parties, Labor in the lead, and “Liz is in the best position to do this”said Sajid Javid.
This is the fifth endorsement from an ex-candidate of Liz Truss. Sajid Javid ended up withdrawing due to lack of sufficient support to get the required number of sponsorships. If the two finalists are chosen by a series of votes reserved for Conservative MPs, it will be up to the members of the party – whose number is estimated at almost 200,000 – to choose the successor of Boris Johnson, forced to resign in following a series of scandals. The announcement of the results of this postal vote is expected on September 5.
