About sixty elected officials from all sides, including PACA president Renaud Muselier and PS leader Olivier Faure for the party, called on Friday, July 29, for the EU to “to reject” of the agreement reached with Azerbaijan to double gas imports, criticizing the “war desires” from this country.

“This initiative continues the fierce race towards the exploitation of our planet’s resources (and) puts the European Union in a situation of new confidence in a State with aspirations to fight”as the signatories of a column published in the daily Le Monde.

The text was mainly signed by the national secretary of the EELV Julien Bayou, the Insoumise Clémentine Autain, the MEP LR François-Xavier Bellamy, the MEP EELV Yannick Jadot, the mayor of Marseille Benoît Payan (Left Union) or even the Senator LR Bruno Retailleau, and Renaud Muselier, president of the South region. Many elected officials of the Renaissance also appear in the list of signatories, such as Constance Le Grip, deputy for Hauts-de-Seine, or Anne-Laurence Petel, deputy for Bouches-du-Rhône.

The PS told AFP that this platform appeared “the position of the whole party” who is this “de facto signatory” in the text.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced on July 18, in Baku, an agreement with Azerbaijan to double “in a few years” The EU imports gas from this former Soviet republic in the Caucasus.

“We urge the European Commission to abandon this project with Azerbaijan and the Heads of State and Government of the EU, as well as the European Parliament, not to approve under any circumstances an agreement that has the effect of replacing dependence on Russian gas with dependence on Azerbaijani gas”warning to the signatories.

According to them, the country of the Caucasus “Also participated in the chaotic race for funding weapons that exterminated Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh or the Republic of Armenia”.

“Azerbaijan made it clear that it is not satisfied with the military victory”they commit to talk about “The 44 Day War of Fall 2020” in the Nagorny Karabakh region, a territory disputed by Armenia.

In their eyes, this agreement constitutes “more than a response from the past, contrary to ecological transition commitments and the requirement for greener energy for a more sovereign European Union”. “By choosing Azerbaijan as a gas supplier, Mrs von der Leyen is actually weakening the European Union”they warn.
