No lights, mobile phone on the handlebars, drunkenness: an average of 34 cyclists fined every day

Every day, an average of 34 cyclists are fined in Belgium, according to figures from Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden (CD&V), reported by Het Nieuwsblad, Het Belang van Limburg and Gazet van Antwerpen on Thursday. In 2021, the police fined 12,517 cyclists.

The three most common violations are failure to obey bicycle lights, failure to obey traffic lights, and cell phones while driving. Police also fined 360 cyclists for drink-driving, while 150 cyclists were fined for “riding without holding the handlebars or with an animal on a leash“, according to Minister Verlinden in his reply to the MP Mr. Michel De Maegd.
