Olav Kooy wins the first stage of the Tour of Poland with a sprint

In a sprint stage with a very even last kilometer, young Olav Kooy (Jumbo-Visma, 20) came to beat Germany’s Phil Bachaus (Bahrain Victorious), winner of the first stage in 1 year between Lublin and Chelm. Led well by his teammates Mike Theunissen and Mick Van Dyke, the Dutchman logically wears the jersey of the leader in the general classification.

The end of the race was marked by a huge crash in the peloton. As the red blaze passed, a drop cut the peloton in half and disorganized the troops, allowing Jumbo-Visma to shoot Olav Kooij perfectly for the win. France’s Arnaud Demaret, who avoided the fall, was unable to start his sprint and finished ninth in the stage, a hair’s breadth from Mark Cavendish.
